The show is judged under ZNA (Zen Nippon Airinkai) standards, the international body for nishikigoi judging. If you have ever wanted to see how a Kohaku, Sanke, or Showa is actually scored, the judging walkthroughs are open to the public on both days. Bring questions for the judges. Most are happy to talk pattern, conformation, and skin quality with anyone genuinely interested.

What is on the floor

A typical SAKKS Gauteng show pulls entries across breeder, hobbyist, and grand champion classes, with the major SA bloodlines well represented. The sponsor stands run alongside the judging floor, so you can browse Hikari feed, Koi Petco fish and equipment, and WCB pond products at the same venue, on the same day.

If you keep koi, this is also the easiest weekend of the year to:

  • Talk live and direct to breeders without the WhatsApp lag
  • See how serious hobbyists rig transport vats, aeration, and water management
  • Buy young stock from breeders who will tell you exactly what bloodline you are taking home
  • Watch a benching session in real time and learn what good actually looks like

Where to find Minurphy

We will have our heat-welded KOI vats on the floor across both show days. Food-safe 900 gsm PVC, RF-welded seams (no stitch holes, no fibre contamination), and the reinforced corners that take a full-water vat from one venue to the next without complaint.

If you breed koi or run a club, come find us. We have built vats for everything from a single tosai going to a new home, to retailer fleets moving stock between Joburg and the coast. Talk to us about diameter, depth, drain fittings, and what your setup actually needs. We can quote on the day.

Practical notes if it is your first show

  • Bring cash. Sponsor stands and breeder stalls do not always run cards reliably at outdoor venues.
  • Closed shoes. It is grass and there is splashing near the vats and bagging stations.
  • If you are buying fish, bring a clean cooler and ask the seller to bag with oxygen for the trip home. Most will, free of charge, but ask before you pay.
  • First-time buyers, walk the floor twice before you buy. Prices and quality vary widely between stalls. The breeder who answers all your questions clearly is usually the one to buy from.

Cannot make the show?

If you cannot get to Ferndale that weekend but want to talk vats, the KOI vats product page covers the standard sizes, materials, lead times, and the answers to most questions we get. WhatsApp dimensions or a sketch of your setup and we will quote within 24 hours. We have shipped vats from Polokwane to Cape Town, so distance is not usually the issue. The work is in getting the right diameter and depth for your trailer, your stocking density, and how you plan to fill and drain it.

See you at Ferndale on 30 and 31 May.
