Foot sponge mats at the farm door: getting the basics of a footbath right

A foot sponge mat only works if people actually step on it and the disinfectant in it is still doing its job. How to size, place, and look after a PVC foot mat at farm and food-processing entrances, and what to ask for when you order.

A foot sponge mat is about the simplest piece of biosecurity kit on a farm. A foam core in a welded PVC skin, filled with disinfectant, on the floor at the door. And it is just as simple to get wrong. A mat people step around, or one that has been sitting in a crust of mud for a week, is a blue rectangle on the floor and not much more.

Your biosecurity plan, and the disinfectant in it, belongs to you and your vet. This is about the mat: how to size it, where to put it, and how to keep it doing its job.

A mat is one step, not the whole plan

A footbath is one layer in a biosecurity routine, alongside dedicated boots or overshoes for each house, hand washing, controlled visitor access, and keeping vehicles and equipment clean. It works best as the last step at the door, not the only one. Treat it as part of the routine everyone follows, every time, and not as something that does the job on its own.

Size it so nobody can step around it

The commonest failure is a mat that is smaller than the doorway. People step to one side to keep their boots dry, and the mat does nothing.

  • Fill the doorway. The mat should run wall to wall across the entrance.
  • Make it long enough that each foot lands on it at least once in a normal stride.
  • Put it where it cannot be avoided, right at the threshold, with no gap beside it.

Because we make every mat to order, we cut it to your doorway rather than asking you to fit a standard size.

Keep the disinfectant working

  1. Brush off first. Mud and manure on a boot use up many disinfectants. A boot brush or scrape station before the mat lets the mat do its work.
  2. Mix to the label. Use the disinfectant your vet or biosecurity plan specifies, at the strength on the product label. Stronger is not better, and weaker does not work.
  3. Change it on schedule. The label will tell you how long the mixed solution stays effective. A busy door uses it up faster, so change it more often there.
  4. Clean the mat itself. Lift it by the handles, rinse out the muck, and refill. A mat with a layer of dirt in it is a dirty puddle with disinfectant on top.
  5. Keep it out of the sun and rain where you can. Direct sun and rainwater both work against the solution.

What makes a good mat

  • Foam core. It holds the disinfectant and squeezes it onto the sole and sides of each boot that steps on it, instead of a shallow tray people splash through.
  • Welded PVC skin. Welded seams keep the liquid in and the mat wipeable. No stitching for liquid to wick through.
  • A raised padded border. It keeps the solution in the mat, not spread across the floor, and gives the edge some give underfoot.
  • Webbing handles. A mat that is easy to lift is a mat that actually gets cleaned.

Farms and food processing

We build foot sponge mats for farm entrances and food-processing entrances. Poultry houses, piggeries, and dairies each have their own routine, and so does a processing line. Tell us where the mat is going, the doorway width, and the disinfectant you use, and we make it to suit.

Repairs and re-orders

A split skin or a seam that has opened will leak and dry out the foam. We repair foot mats and other PVC products regardless of who made them, so send a photo before you replace one. Once we have made a mat for you, the pattern stays on file, so the next one is faster. Volume pricing applies on orders of 10 or more identical mats, which helps when every house on the farm needs one.

How to order

WhatsApp 083 631 5329 with the doorway width, how many mats you need, and the disinfectant you use. A photo of the entrance helps. We come back within 24 hours with a price and lead time, and there is no minimum order. Foot mats sit within our custom products range, alongside everything else we make to order.

Common questions

Frequently asked

  • A foam core inside a welded PVC skin, filled with disinfectant. The foam holds the liquid so it wets the sole of each boot that steps on it, and the raised padded border keeps the liquid in the mat. Webbing handles make it easy to lift for cleaning.
